Angelique Kidjo Releases New Music Video
Angelique Kidjo has released a new music video for her song Once In A Lifetime, ahead of her performance at Royal Festival Hall on the 8th of June. The three time Grammy Award Winner has partnered with Jeff Bhasker, a producer who's previously collaborated with Drake and Kanye West, for her new album, a reimagining of Talking Heads' 'Remain In Light' which features guest collaborators including Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, Tony Allen and Blood Orange.
The origins of Kidjo's latest project go back to her escape from the regime of her native home Benin in 1983, to France, where she first listened to the album and fell in love with it. After meeting Jeff Bhasker, the pair began working on a reimagined version to bring the album full circle. When asked about the project, Angelique said:
"As 'Remain in Light was influenced by the music of my continent, I want to pay back the homage and create my own African take on Talking Heads' songs. We all know that rock music came from the blues and thus from Africa. Now is the time to bring rock back to Africa, connect our minds, and bring all our sounds to a new level of sharing and understanding."
Kidjo's new take on the album brings about a fresh perspective, and a feeling of urgency surrounding themes and issues raised, including the empowerment of women on 'Great Curve' and African skin bleaching on 'Seen And Not Seen', elsewhere suffusing tracks with rhythms from traditional Beninese folk songs.
The album is set for release on the 8th of June, the same day as her concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and you can watch the video for Once In A Lifetime below!
